Aston Villa are interested in bringing Stoke City’s Glenn Whelan to Villa Park this summer, according to a report by The Sun.
The media outlet claim Steve Bruce is ready to make the Republic of Ireland international one of his main transfer targets, as he aims to add experience to his squad.
Villa finished last season’s Championship campaign in 13th, a position which by their standards was rather disappointing, and their fans will be hoping for a much improved outing this year.
Whelan has been at the Potters since January 2008, joining from Sheffield Wednesday, and has been a key player for Mark Hughes’ side.
Although he had been used less this season, he had still gone on to make 26 Premier League starts for the club, however his time at the bet365 Stadium could be coming to an end.
Hughes has brought in former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Darren Fletcher on a free transfer this summer, which almost certainly affect the amount of playing time Whelan gets.
With the news of the new arrival, Bruce believes his chances of securing a switch for the 33-year-old is more likely to happen.
With Whelan entering the final year of his contract, the Potters could be ready to start entertaining bids for a player they could potentially lose for free next summer.
