Jose Mourinho has been warned by his former colleagues at Real Madrid that Gareth Bale could struggle at London club, according to reports. Wales international is closing in on a come back to Tottenham, who are negotiating with La Liga giants over a season-long loan deal and how the winger’s £600,000-a-week salary will be financed.
The Portuguese tactician was desperate to sign Gareth during his time as Red Devils boss and even told the attacker before a pre-season friendly with Los Blancos in 2017: ‘I cannot buy you because you don’t talk’. Jose Mourinho is fully behind Spurs push to sign Bale before the end of the window.
But the report also claims that Jose has spoken to insiders at Real Madrid to get a better understanding of the Welsh winger’s situation and was told to ‘proceed with caution’. The Portuguese boss is also keen for Tottenham to recruit a new striker to ease the burden on Harry Kane but the arrival of Bale will hugely strengthen his options in front-line.
The 31-year-old winger has drastically fallen out of favour with Zizou and played only 20 games for Real Madrid in all tournaments last campaign. La Liga giants are now desperate to offload Gareth before the window closes on October 5 and are not even looking for a loan fee from Tottenham.
Red Devils are also targeting Gareth as an alternative to Jadon Sancho. But Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, insists a return to Tottenham is his first-choice destination. ‘Gareth still loves Spurs,’ Barnett said. ‘We are talking. It’s where he wants to be.’ On Wednesday morning, Barnett added: ‘It’s close but not done.’
