AS Roma are interested in signing Chelsea right-back Davide Zappacosta, as a replacement for the recently departed Rick Karsdorp. Italy international moved to London club from Torino in 2017, marking his first foray outside of Serie A having previously taken in spells with Atalanta, Avellino and Isola Liri.
Zappacosta has found regular playing time hard to come by with the Blues and was restricted to only four Premier League matches in total last campaign. Davide did play in ten games during London club’s run to Europa League glory, but he has already been deemed surplus to requirements for the 2019-20 season.
Giallorossi are aiming to seal a transfer deal for the 27-year-old defender before the Italian window closes on August 23. The Italian club are exploring the possibility of a loan move for the out-of-favour Blues right-back with the option to buy next year, having recently sent Kardsorp to Feyenoord on loan.
Roma are keen on strengthening their back-line as they bid for a swift come back to the Champions League, having finished sixth in the Serie A table last term. Italian defender’s time in England has been disappointing, but if he can start playing football week in week out again, there is every opportunity he could rediscover his best form.
Davide is unlikely to earn a place in Frank Lampard’s starting XI at London club, and it may be in the best interest of both sides if he heads back to his homeland. If Zappacosta impresses at the Stadio Olimpico, Davide could then be rewarded with a permanent come back to Italy.
