Real Sociedad are close to agreeing on a deal with Arsenal for Nacho Monreal, but the La Liga club want it done days before their transfer window closes. The Premier League transfer window may have shut earlier this month, but Spain’s runs until Monday 2 September, allowing them to add footballers from England until then.
An agreement between the London club and Sociedad for the left-back is all but sealed, but the Spanish side do not want discussions to drag on and want the transfer announced by Friday. Sociedad travel to take on Athletic Bilbao in the Basque derby on Friday night in La Liga and want to have Nacho available for that contest.
If the agreement is not done by then, it may not be entirely ruled out, but would not sit well with the Basque side. After the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, Gunners coach Unai Emery said of Monreal’s situation: ‘This is one issue we need to speak in the next few days because in Europe they don’t finish the transfer window yet.
‘It’s the reason I was speaking about it not being healthy that we finish two weeks ago in Europe because the team is not completely closed for us at the moment. Real Sociedad already signed Portu from Girona and Alexander Isak from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The Spanish club have reportedly offered Monreal a two-year deal, with the option of a further year, although the amount of a transfer fee is unclear. The 33-year-old defender has made 250 appearances for Gunners since arriving from Malaga in 2012 for around £8.5m.
