PSV in the battle to sign £65,000-a-week Liverpool defender

PSV have made a surprise approach to add Nathaniel Phillips. The Eredivisie giants are currently scouring the PL for a new defender and have set their sights on the Merseyside giants centre-back. Nathaniel is viewed as a budget option by PSV, although they are ready to face stiff competition from several English teams.

The Reds have made Phillips available for sale in winter, with the German coach prepared to offer him the chance to continue his progress elsewhere. Watford had recently made a £7m approach for the 24-year-old defender earlier this month, but it appears the Reds are holding out for a fee of £12m.

Formerly of Bolton, the English defender was a crucial part of the depleted Reds defence that had to deal with the absence of van Dijk, Gomez and Matip last campaign. The Englishman stepped up to the plate quite well, helping the club finish in the top four and secure UCL football.

However, Nathaniel has fallen out of favour at Liverpool after the return of crucial defensive footballers and the addition of Konate. Nathaniel has yet to make a single PL game so far, thus leading to speculation over his long-term future at the club.

It has put PSV Eindhoven on alert as well, with the Dutch club looking for a new defender in the winter transfer window. Roger Schmidt’s men recently had to deal with the injury to defensive linchpin Andre Ramalho.
