Paul Scholes is confident 17-year-old Man United striker has big future

Paul Scholes is backing Mason Greenwood to impress for Red Devils when he makes his debut in the Europa League with Astana. U21 England international makes his bow in the tournament in just his second start for Man United, with Norwegian coach keen to bed Mason into the first-team squad after the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

Red Devils legend Paul also came through Man United youth ranks and heaped praise on the young centre-forward, comparing him to fellow academy graduate Marcus Rashford. ‘He’s a highly talented lad,’ Scholes said. ‘He’s yet to do it at first-team level, but given the opportunity, I’m sure he will.

‘He’s very much in the Marcus Rashford mould. Mason is very quick, two good feet, very skilful and can score goals. ‘It’s exciting. I think it’s an exciting competition for him because he can play all the young footballers. ‘Angel Gomez, players who are doing well with the U23s will get a chance in this tournament.’

Mason has been heavily involved in the senior set-up in pre-season and the new season, and Norwegian coach claims he is one of the best strikers he’s seen in football. ‘Mason is still very young, but he’s maturing, and he’s developed so much since I came in,’ he said.

‘His appetite for football is growing. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him apart from going out there, enjoy yourself and work hard. ‘When you’ve got centre-forwards who can score goals, you should never lose the hunger of scoring goals. Never lose the appetite of creating opportunities and be ready to take yours.
