Nigel Winterburn feels Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar would be great signings for the London giants and would like to see his former club snap up both players, but with only enough money to buy one, Ghana international would be his choice.
The Spanish manager is keen to add a midfielder to his squad before the transfer window closes on 5 October, with Thomas and Houssem crucial targets to fill the role. Both are availabe this summer, but the problem has been price, with Atletico insisting that Arsenal must meet Partey’s release clause of £43m, while Lyon want the same fee for Aouar.
The London giants have only been able to muster offers worth nearly £30m and must improve them if they want to force through a purchase before 5 October Winterburn cannot see his former club coming up with the funds to buy both men and given the choice, it would be Thomas who the England international would go for.
‘Players like Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar are players that I’m pleased to see Arsenal linked with. They are different types of players that can bolster a midfield,’ Winterburn said. ‘I really like Partey because he is quick, solid and powerful off the ball as much as on it.’
‘There have been times in the past when Arsenal fail to break things down because of the pace of other teams on the counterattack, which is something that Partey could come in to do. He takes the ball in tight situations and has the power and the ability to go past the opposing midfield players.’
