MANCHESTER UNITED manager Jose Mourinho is seeking an “off the radar” attacking midfielder to add to his squad before the transfer deadline.
Manchester United have spent £140million on three high-profile new players this summer.
The deals appear to have worked, with United enjoying a strong start to the new campaign.
However, Mourinho is still in the market for one more player before the transfer window closes next Thursday.
And journalist Ian McGarry says that fourth signing may not be a marquee one.
“There are many derivatives and permutations on what business may be done at Manchester United before the window is open,” McGarry told The Transfer Window podcast.
“We know for a fact he wants a more versatile attacking midfielder to complement what he already has in a gruelling season of Champions League and domestic action in the Premier League.
“And in a season that Mourinho has admitted will shape his Manchester United career as coach because he has to win the Premier League or Champions League to prove he’s the man to take Manchester United forward.
“So Jose Mourinho will be desperately trying to do business before the transfer window ends but what it might be is not a big headline signing but maybe someone who is a wee bit off the radar and someone who does a job for him.
“He’s done that before at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.”
United have been linked with a raft of players in recent weeks, including winger targets Thomas Lemar and Ivan Perisic.
Neither deal appears close to completion, however, and Red Devils’ boss Mourinho has relieved the pressure on executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward by insisting he won’t be upset if no more arrivals come in.
United face Leicester today seeking to extend their winning start to the new season, having beaten both West Ham and Swansea 4-0 already.
