Red Devils have reportedly sent scouts to watch Verona on several occasions this season with Matteo Pessina said to be on their radar. Man United midfield has been a problem for the Norwegian coach so far this season, particularly after the injuries suffered by McTominay and Pogba.
After seeing Ander Herrera leave last summer, Man United didn’t move to fill that void and so there has been a reliance on the likes of Matic, Fred and Pereira to offer them quality in midfield. For a club looking to compete at the top level on several fronts, that is arguably not enough for them to do so.
Bruno Fernandes arrived in winter to bolster that department, but it stays to be seen whether or not Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels as though he needs more. Red Devils scouts have been sent to Italy to watch Verona on ‘several occasions’ this year, with U21 Italy international now said to be of interest as they monitor his progression.
Matteo is currently on loan from Atalanta and has played 21 games so far this campaign, chipping in with three goals. It stays to be seen whether or not Atalanta plan to see him come back next year and play a crucial role for them, but Red Devils are now seemingly interested in trying to prise him away to Theatre of Dreams instead.
Time will tell if they’ve been left impressed enough to make an official offer, but the report above would certainly suggest that they’re keeping a close eye on the Italian midfielder to see if he could develop into a long-term solution for the club in that area.
