Man United on the brink of signing 35-year-old English shot-stopper

Aston Villa shot-stopper Tom Heaton is set to join Man United on a free transfer this summer. England international started his career at the Theatre of Dreams but he failed to make a single appearance for Man United due to the presence of Edwin van der Sar at the Old Trafford.

Tom forged a PL career for himself at Burnley, where he spent six campaigns before joining Aston Villa. Heaton was bought as the first choice at Villa Park but he suffered a devastating knee injury after his £8m move to the Midlands.

Aston Villa turned to Emi Martinez last summer, which has starved the 35-year-old goalkeeper of first-team football and the Red Devils believe he can provide good back-up to David De Gea and Dean Henderson next campaign. Both Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira are expected to leave the club this summer, while Lee Grant could also follow.

That leaves Man United short on backup and the English goalkeeper is ready to join to provide exactly that. Tom is out of deal next month, meaning the Red Devils will not need to pay a fee to sign the veteran. Tom has three caps for England and was a backup option in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2018 World Cup.

While England hopeful Johnstone is the Norwegian’s first choice of signing, it’s unlikely he’s settle for the role of No 3 keeper. Heaton is out of contract this summer and is already able to negotiate pre-contract terms with clubs. The three-cap England stopper recovered from a serious knee injury to serve as Martinez’s No2 at Villa Park this term.
