Bruno Fernandes has been left ‘annoyed’ at both Red Devils and Sporting Lisbon over his failed winter transfer move but is still hoping to make the switch to Theatre of Dreams. Portugal international has emerged as Man United’s top target this month, with the Norwegian manager keen to strengthen his midfield options.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield has been depleted by injuries in recent weeks, with the fantastic Scott McTominay joining World Cup-winner Paul Pogba in the treatment room over the festive period. Bruno has developed into a key figure for Sporting since signing from Sampdoria in 2017, scoring 14 goals in 32 games so far this campaign.
But Red Devils pursuit of Fernandes seems ready to end in disappointment, with the Premier League club unwilling to meet Sporting’s demands for a winter deal. The 25-year-old playmaker has been left ‘annoyed’ with the conduct of both Sporting and Man United during talks but still wants to secure a move to Theatre of Dreams as soon as possible.
Discussing the Portuguese playmaker’s future this week, super-agent Jorge Mendes said: ‘I don’t know what will happen to Bruno, honestly I don’t know. ‘If he doesn’t leave now, for sure he will leave in summer. Sporting have been talking to other clubs, I’m not sure what will happen if he will go now or at the end of the season.’
During Man United’s pursuit of the midfielder, Arsenal legend Paul Merson urged Solskjaer to scrap the move and attempt to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa instead. ‘Forget Bruno Fernandes Man United should be trying to sign Jack Grealish,’ Merson said.
