Man United leading race to sign 21-year-old Ligue 1 centre-back

Man United have reportedly placed Lille centre-back Sven Botman on their shortlist of defender targets ahead of the summer transfer window. Man United will look to close the gap on fierce rivals Man City by strengthening their options up front and at the back ahead of the new campaign.

Borussia Dortmund centre-forward Erling Haaland is thought to be the Red Devils number one priority in attack but club officials have several options in mind at centre-half, with the Norwegian manager keen for a marquee signing to partner captain Harry Maguire.

Red Devils have been closely monitoring Jules Kounde’s displays for much of the campaign and are confident the 22-year-old defender would be the ‘perfect’ signing. However, Sevilla’s eye-watering €80m asking price is ‘complicating’ a potential deal.

The PL giants have therefore been forced to explore alternatives in the transfer market and Sven is high up on their list of possible targets. The Dutchman was heavily linked with both Liverpool and Tottenham in the winter transfer window and is regarded as one of the finest young centre-backs in Ligue 1.

But the Red Devils interest stays just that for the time being and the Theatre of Dreams outfit are yet to make an offer or even enter into talks for the 21-year-old centre-back.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane continues to be linked and Villarreal’s Pau Torres has been offered to Man United on several occasions. It stays to be seen which centre-back Red Devils will look to prioritise but the club are intent on bolstering in the position and there are several chances and avenues to pursue over the coming months.
