River Plate footballer Nicolas De La Cruz is on Man United’s transfer radar after establishing himself in the Uruguay team alongside Edinson Cavani, according to reports. Uruguay international’s displays have alerted several teams in Europe, with the Red Devils are one of five teams ready to make an offer.
Nicolas has shone for River Plate and earned his first international cap last year, while he has played in all three of Uruguay’s Copa America games so far this summer, most recently in Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Bolivia.
Nicolas, who is a key player at River, will command a fee of between €16m and €20m and would represent one of the club’s biggest ever sales. Although River and coach Marcelo Gallardo are loathe to lose such an important footballer, they are now resigned to his departure with so many teams interested in his services.
In addition to Man United, Serie A side Fiorentina are also looking at Nicolas and already have a sizeable South American contingent including Uruguay defender Martin Caceres. But United have Cavani in their ranks, and Edinson, who recently signed a contract extension at Old Trafford, may have recommended his teammate to the club.
Man United have several South American footballers themselves, including Brazilians Fred and Alex Telles, while they signed Uruguayan striker Facundo Pellistri from Penarol last summer on the recommendation of Diego Forlan. Nicolas has been linked with other PL clubs in the past, including Everton and Man United’s rivals Man City.
