Man United are interested in signing Atalanta defender Cristian Romero with the centre-back on their three-man shortlist this summer. U23 Argentina international has enjoyed an excellent 2020-21 campaign on loan at Atalanta from Juventus, with the former expected to take up their option to sign him permanently for €25m at the end of the season.
La Dea could consider a quick sale however for a fee in the region of €40m, with there is firm interest from the Red Devils. Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde and Sven Botman of Lille are the two other names on the Red Devils list of possible additions at the defence.
With Edinson Cavani committing to another campaign at the Theatre of Dreams, The Red Devils are likely to focus on bolstering other areas of their side with a long-term partner for Harry Maguire thought to be a priority. Rio Ferdinand believes bringing in a first-team option at the back will enable to club to make the step up next campaign.
‘I think Manchester United’s prime position for them to strengthen, to really improve and become a team who can compete is centre-back,’ Ferdinand said after the 2-1 defeat to Leicester on Tuesday.
‘To get a partner for Harry Maguire who you go, actually every week he produces, he’s there. At the moment there are too many players centre-forwards, especially those who probably are looking when they get in the tunnel and are thinking, “I’ve got a chance here. I think I can smell a chance.’
