Man United keep a close eye on 23-year-old Serbia international

Man United have reportedly opened negotiations with Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic and are hopeful of agreeing on a deal to sign the defender for a fee of only £8.5m in the summer transfer window.

Victor Lindelof has failed to convince Red Devils hierarchy that he’s the long-term solution to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence and the club are intent on bolstering the position in order to boost their title hopes next campaign.

Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Lille’s Sven Botman have all been linked in recent weeks and Serbia international represents a far cheaper alternative to those mentioned, with the Norwegian manager thought to be an admirer.

Discussions between the Red Devils and Nikola are well underway and the PL giants believe they can land the centre-back for €10m. And while Fiorentina are reluctant to sell Milenkovic for a fee below €15m, an overall package would still be relatively inexpensive.

After all, the 23-year-old centre-back is unlikely to be demanding huge wages given he’s currently on a salary of just €1m-a-year in Florence. His deal expires in 2022 so Fiorentina will need to sell him at the end of the campaign or risk losing him on a free transfer the following summer.

Eric Bailly, meanwhile, has been stalling over a new contract at Old Trafford and the Red Devils could be open to offers for the Ivory Coast international. Just last month, the Serbian defender revealed that legendary ex-United centre-back Nemanja Vidic was his hero while growing up.
