Man United keep a close eye on 22-year-old Portugal international

Red Devils could be forced to match the club’s transfer record to sign Ruben Diaz in winter with Benfica seeking £80m for the centre-back. Portugal international has emerged as one of the finest young centre-backs on the continent following his emergence from the Eagles academy in 2017.

Ruben has 13 caps for Portugal and has made 85 appearances for the Portuguese club. Eagles are desperate to keep Dias and are willing to hand him a new deal just 12 months after he signed his last renewal following interest from Red Devils, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

Benfica hope to include a release clause of nearly £80m in that deal, meaning Man United will have to match the fee they paid Leicester for Maguire to get the 22-year-old defender. Norwegian coach has paired Maguire with Victor Lindelof or Axel Tuanzebe in the Premier League so far this term, but Solskjaer stays keen to bolster his back-line.

Chris Smalling is expected to be sold next summer, while two of Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo will be sold. Norwegian tactician wanted to get rid of nine footballers last summer and started the process by disposing of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian.

But the Red Devils backed him with just three signings, and he wants more in winter to top up his depleted squad. Man United heavily linked with Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes, Ajax playmaker Donny van de Beek, Juventus centre-forward Mario Mandzukic and Lyon striker Moussa Dembele.
