Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has reportedly told friends that he’s eager for his club to rival Man United for the transfer of Leicester City star James Maddison. The 23-year-old playmaker has shone at the King Power Stadium and looks like he’s set to make the step up to a bigger club, even if Foxes are currently faring better than both clubs.
James have linked as an £80m target for Red Devils, and now Mikel Arteta has expressed an interest in signing him too. The Spanish manager only recently took over at the Emirates Stadium, but will no doubt be aware from his side’s early struggles that major work is needed in the transfer market.
Maddison looks a perfect signing to this Gunners squad, with Mesut Ozil now 31 years old and no longer performing at his usual high standards on as regular a basis. England international could be a like-for-like replacement in that number ten role, and looks like he could fit in well with the style of football Spaniard wants Gunners playing.
Of course, if Arsenal could win the race for the English playmaker’s signature, it would be a big blow for Red Devils, who also look in need of a footballer of his creativity and quality in between the midfield and front-line. James also named in the Three Lions squad several times which is already a big achievement for the playmaker.
It’s been a difficult season at Theatre of Dreams and Maddison could be just what Man United need to improve on under-performers like Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard. Red Devils signed Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer.
