Man United join race to sign 24-year-old Eredivisie midfielder

Man United are eyeing a move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez should they fail to land Barcelona footballer Frenkie de Jong in the upcoming 2022 summer transfer window, with the player valued at nearly €30m. Current Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is ready to take over as the new Red Devils coach at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Dutch tactician has a huge task ahead of him after a campaign of woe that has seen Man United struggle to salvage any semblance of honour. A revamp of Man United’s roster is on the cards, with the midfield, especially in dire need of quality reinforcements.

The Red Devils have already earmarked Frenkie de Jong as a major transfer target, but landing him could prove difficult. The Dutchman is already a crucial part of Xavi’s plans, and there is little reason for him to move to Man United. Should that prove to be the case, Mexico international is the man that Man United will turn to.

Alvarez joined Ajax in 2019 and has swiftly established himself as a crucial figure for the Dutch club. Erik ten Hag will be intimately familiar with Edson after managing him over the last few campaigns.

A defensive midfielder who can also double up as a centre-back, the 24-year-old’s ability to read the game and position himself to stop counter-attacks could prove pivotal to the Red Devils setup.
