Matthijs de Ligt has become a new transfer target at Man United. It appears the club’s new coach Erik ten Tag wants the board to go after the Juventus defender in the summer as he eyes a potential reunion at Theatre of Dreams next campaign.
The Netherlands international had made his professional breakthrough under the leadership of Erik ten Hag. De Ligt made crucial baby steps and furnished his ball-winning abilities at Ajax to eventually become arguably the most promising young defender in world football and earn a big-money move to Bianconeri in 2019.
During his time at Juventus, Matthijs has racked up 115 competitive games. The 22-year-old defender has become a lynchpin in the club’s backline alongside Bonucci and Chiellini, although the centre-back hasn’t enjoyed the desired success, with the Old Lady underperforming in both Serie A and Champions League over the past couple of campaigns.
The Bianconeri most recently lost the Coppa Italia final to Inter Milan, meaning Massimiliano Allegri’s men will have to endure a trophyless season. And even though Champions League football has been secured, the club might not be able to keep hold of their defensive asset in the Dutchman.
De Ligt could be an ideal defensive partner for Varane, adding more depth and quality to the Man United defence. It could further help Man United offload unwanted stars such as Bailly and Jones, with the former already being linked with a move to Newcastle United.
