The Norwegian boss wants Man United to sign Dayot Upamecano ahead of PL rivals Liverpool, according to reports. The German coach has identified France international as a potential target as he tries to bolster his defensive options following the injury crisis at Liverpool.
But Jurgen Klopp has all but ruled out the opportunities of Reds signing Dayot during the winter transfer window, leaving the door open for Ole to bring him to Man United this month. Man United were close to signing Upamecano last summer and remain interested as they look for a long-term partner for captain Harry Maguire.
The 22-year-old centre-back is rated as one of the best young defenders in Europe, having starred for RB Leipzig over the past five years and playing three games for the Les Bleus. The French defender could be bought for £38m in the summer but the Reds Devils are considering tabling a bid of £55m to sign him this month.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has repeatedly called on his former club to sign a defender this month, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both sidelined with severe injuries, but the German manager admits Liverpool are ‘unlikely’ to complete any winter transfers.
‘These decisions are not my decisions,’ Jurgen Klopp said this week. ‘If somebody thinks we should do something, I cannot decide if we do something in the transfer market or not. That must be clear.’
‘I cannot say definitely we will not bring anyone in, it’s just not likely because of the situation in the world. We should not forget that the situation is a tough one for all people and for football clubs as well.’
