Man United held negotiations with 24-year-old La Liga defender

Man United could reportedly turn their attention to Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres as an alternative for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde. The Red Devils have been monitoring the development of Kounde and were keen to bring the centre-back to the club next summer.

Indeed, Kounde was considered the primary defensive target for the Norwegian tactician. However, given the way the finances have been affected due to the covid pandemic, Red Devils may have to look at a cheaper alternative.

Man United can’t afford to spend a huge chunk of money on Jules alone in the summer, which is valued at upwards of £60m currently. This has led to them looking at Pau Torres as an alternative.

Spain international has established himself as one of the rising stars of Spanish football in the last couple of campaigns. With 29 games across all tournaments this term, Pau has made a solid impression and has earned plenty of praise from Villarreal coach Unai Emery.

Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Torres. And they could pounce on the chance to sign the defender, as they would face unanticipated difficulties if Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane decide to depart from the club after the end of the 2020/21 season.

The report states that Pau does have a release clause of nearly £43m, which could make him a feasible option for Red Devils. In spite of an engaging league campaign this season, Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has been sweating over his side’s defensive fragilities, with the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof not being nearly consistent enough.
