Man United held negotiations with 22-year-old South American midfielder

Man United are reportedly targeting Real Madrid star Federico Valverde as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba this summer. Uruguay international enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Los Blancos last campaign where he emerged as a key component in midfield, starting 30 matches in all tournaments.

UCL giants have been beset with injuries in recent weeks with Federico limited to only eight starting games in La Liga this term due to various knocks. The 22-year-old midfielder reportedly earns £120,000-per-week at Santiago Bernabeu and has a release clause of £148m.

The Red Devils are said to be big admirers of Valverde, however, as they are monitoring him ahead of a potential move this summer, confident they can offer improved terms to help convince him to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

Red Devils will not consider paying that sum but having scouted the Uruguayan midfielder on several occasions and they plan to ramp up their interest in the coming months, according to the report. Red Devils may be in the market for another midfielder regardless of whether Paul Pogba stays this summer.

The 27-year-old midfielder, currently sidelined with a thigh injury, has been influential during the run which has seen the Red Devils rise to second in the table but his future remains uncertain after his agent Mino Raiola declared his time at the club ‘over’ in December.

Mino Raiola has since refused to discuss his client’s future, but went onto hint work is being done behind the scenes. ‘I can’t speak about Pogba because people are nervous, they don’t sleep at night,’ Raiola said. ‘I have to work quietly, If I speak, someone gets offended. Pogba must also be left alone.’
