Red Devils are ready to make a renewed bid for Juventus centre-back Matthijs De Ligt after failing with a move for the defender last summer. Man United lost out to Bianconeri as the Old Lady won the battle to sign the Netherlands international for £75m last summer.
The Norwegian manager was desperate to sign Matthijs and was prepared to sign him alongside an £80m move for Harry Maguire. De Ligt’s had a mixed season in Serie A giants and has failed to replicate the form that made him the most sought after player in world football last summer.
The 20-year-old centre-back’s started 17 of Juventus’s 26 games this term, and there is a sense that Maurizio Sarri is not set on the defender. The Red Devils are now set to test Bianconeri’ resolve to keep the Dutch centre-back and are prepared to make a big-money move for him this summer.
It’s unclear whether the Italian club would sell only 12 months into Matthij’s stint in Serie A, but Man United believe he is ‘perfect’ for how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants his side to play at Old Trafford. Ole will seek an alternative to De Ligt should Old Lady not show a willingness to sell and Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly is another target.
This is certainly an area that Man United should bolster in whenever the next transfer window opens, as the likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have all struggled to prove themselves as consistently solid options at back-line. Red Devils heavily linked with Aston Villa attacker Jack Grealish and Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.
