Man City join race to sign €40m-rated Chelsea long-term target

Chelsea and Man United are reportedly facing contest for the possible transfer of Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria. While at London club, despite the English manager’s heavy investment over the summer, a defensive midfielder has long been eyed and the failure to land Declan Rice has only increased this.

Man United and Chelsea have been linked with Switzerland international in the past by the reliable Christian Falk though he also mentioned the Bavarians as admirers of the midfielder in his tweet back in October. Now, there’s also extra contest from their PL rivals Man City.

City are focusing on Denis, which perhaps makes sense as they’ve endured a tough start to the campaign and could do with a long-term replacement for the influential but aging Fernandinho. But Bavarians could win the race as they often do with Germany-based footballers. Bayern Munich are also keen on Zakaria.

Red Devils will no doubt still hope to remain in the running for the 23-year-old midfielder, however, as they could also do with bringing in an upgrade on their defensive midfield options as doubts stay over the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay, while Nemanja Matic is not getting any younger.

Blues look quite strong in that department at the moment, though N’Golo Kante has had his fitness issues in the last year or so, so more depth could undoubtedly be useful. Wherever he ends up, it would be good to see a top young talent like the Swiss midfielder in the PL at some point in his career.
