Liverpool planning to offer new contract to £75,000-a-week midfielder

Negotiations between Georginio Wijnaldum’s representatives and the Merseyside giants are yet to begin, despite his current contract expiring at the end of the upcoming campaign. The Netherlands international has become a crucial figure in the German manager’s midfield and started 35 of their PL games this campaign.

Wijnladum joined the club from Newcastle in a £25m deal back in 2016 and there is no suggestion he will leave. But, his agents are still waiting for the Merseyside giants to open negotiations about a new deal.

Georginio has already won the PL and UCL during his spell at Liverpool and will hope to add more titles to his collection next campaign. The German tactician is looking to strengthen his midfield options this summer with the signing of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Spain international has one year left on his current contract and has told Bavarians he wants to leave. It’s thought he is keen to join the Reds after negotiations with Jurgen Klopp. He has the support of Bayern coach Hansi Flick, who thinks a move to the PL is the logical next step in his career.

‘As a person and as an athlete, I can understand him,’ the Bayern manager said. ‘Thiago played for Barcelona, and seven years for Bayern. Now he wants a new challenge, which in my opinion must be the Premier League.’

The Merseyside giants also linked with Watford forward Ismaila Sarr. The Senegalese winger fits the profile of footballers Jurgen Klopp likes and had a good debut season with Watford, scoring five times and providing four assists in the PL.
