Liverpool missed chance to sign €60m-rated Bundesliga midfielder

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has confirmed he turned down a personal plea from Jurgen Klopp to join the Merseyside giants. Germany international has been one of the standout footballers in the Bundesliga over the last 12 months, following a slow start to life at the Allianz Arena in 2018.

Leon was tracked by a host of top European teams after it became clear that he would leave Schalke in 2018 once his deal expired. Reds revolution was already underway when the German manager made a move for Goretzka and tried to convince the midfielder that his future should be at Liverpool.

However, though the 25-year-old midfielder is happy that Jurgen Klopp has found success at Anfield, he says he’s happy with his decision to join the Bavarians. ‘Liverpool were a consideration of course,’ he said. ‘They’re a great club and their development since Klopp came has been amazing.’

‘We’re all a little proud of him winning the title, but I was 100 percent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.’ Though the Merseyside giants have had success of their own in the last two years, few could question the German midfielder’s decision.

Leon was a mainstay in Bayern’s side last term as the Bavarians completed a Treble, which was finished off with the UCL final victory over PSG. Leon may well have been doubting his decision when seeing Reds lift the UCL in 2019, but he will have felt vindicated a year later when he and his Bavarians team-mates won the title themselves.

Since arriving at the Allianz Arena, Leon has won all the trophies on offer to him, lifting two Bundesliga trophies, two German Cups, two German Super Cups, the UCL, and the UEFA Super Cup.
