Liverpool leading race to sign €25m-rated Liga NOS defender

Man City are in a pole position to secure the signing of Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes. It’s claimed that the Merseyside giants, Real Madrid, Juventus, Milan and Napoli all like Nuno, but it’s Cityzens who lead the race for his signature. Overall, Mendes has played 34 games in all tournaments for Lions, scoring once and making two assists.

The Spanish coach seems to be keen on adding Portugal international to his left-back options for the next campaign and Man City have an idea to bring the price tag down. They have loaned right back Pedro Porro to Sporting for two years with an option to buy, and he could become key to the 18-year-old defender pursuit.

Liga NOS giants want the €70m release clause in the Portuguese defender’s deal, but Man City could use Porro to try and negotiate that fee down this summer. Nuno has played a crucial role in Sporting’s title pursuit this campaign, and City may view him as their left-back of the future after a fantastic season.

A deal would also be something of a blow to the Reds, as Liverpool had failed with a bid to bring Nuno to Anfield. Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards may still be keen, but it instead seems like Nuno could be lining up with the Reds next campaign as Man City move in.

Along with Portuguese legends Ronaldo and Fernandes, Sporting have brought through the likes of Luis Figo, Simao, Nani and Joao Moutinho. The current crop of the Lions stars contain several highly-rated teenagers who have been linked to top clubs, including Joelson Fernandes, Tiago Tomas and defender Eduardo Quaresma.
