Liverpool keeping tabs with 23-year-old Portugal international

The Merseyside club boss Jurgen Klopp is targeting a move for Wolverhampton midfielder Ruben Neves, according to reports. The Premier League leaders have already missed out on signing Timo Werner, with the RB Leipzig star now on the verge of joining Chelsea despite holding negotiations with Jurgen Klopp.

Neves, meanwhile, has enjoyed another excellent campaign with Wolves as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side stay in the battle for a Champions League place when the Premier League restarts next week. The German coach has identified Portugal international as one of his top targets for the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims that the Reds boss feels Ruben can ‘freshen up’ Liverpool’s midfield. Neves, who was signed from Porto in a £15m deal in 2017, is now valued at nearly £50m.

The Merseyside giants are looking to keep their midfield intact, but the Premier League leaders run the risk of losing Georginio Wijnaldum as the Netherlands international has just a year remaining on his current deal and could leave on a free transfer next summer.

Reds have also been linked with Adama Traore, who has shone alongside Ruben at Wolves this campaign. Jurgen is keen to bolster his attacking options to ease the burden on Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane and had targeted Timo. But with the RB Leipzig striker heading to Chelsea, Traore represents a viable alternative.

Meanwhile, former Reds midfielder Steve McManaman believes Jurgen Klopp could have a signing up his sleeve after missing out on Timo. ‘You’d love them to go and buy a superstar but when has Jurgen Klopp gone out and bought a superstar that was at the tip of everyone’s tongue?’ McManaman said.
