Liverpool keeping close tabs with €30m-rated Turkish centre-back

Reds could make a move for Schalke 04 centre-back Ozan Kabak to replace Virgil van Dijk when the transfer window reopens in winter. Liverpool have drawn up a shortlist of defenders following the injury to Virgil, who is expected to be on the sidelines for most of the campaign after rupturing his ACL in the Merseyside derby with Everton last week.

As per the report, Reds are expected to make a renewed attempt to sign Ben White during the mid-season trading period after failing to get a deal over the line for the Brighton star in the summer. However, Ozan has also been lined up as a feasible alternative should the Reds fail in their pursuit of Ben White once again.

Turkey international joined Galatasaray’s academy back in 2011 and caught the eye across youth levels before signing his first professional deal in 2017. Kabak made his first-team debut during the 2017-18 campaign and went on to feature 17 times in all tournaments in the first half of the 2018-19 season.

The 20-year-old defender earned rave reviews for his displays in the group stages of the 2018-19 UCL, which paved the way for a switch to the Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart in winter 2019. The Turkish centre-back quickly established himself as a regular starter in Germany and finished the season with 15 league starts.

Ozan switched boats to join Schalke 04 last summer and played 28 games in all tournaments over the course of an impressive debut campaign, scoring thrice in the process. Reds went into the campaign a tad light in their central defensive options following the departure of long-serving Dejan Lovren to Zenit in the summer window.
