The Merseyside giants have reportedly been told they can seal the transfer of Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly for a fee of £100m. The 29-year-old defender is one of the best footballers in the world in his position and would be a fantastic addition for most top teams, with a host of big footballers linked with him in recent times.
Man United and Man City have also been mentioned as being among his suitors, but the Reds are also long-time admirers and are in particular need of a new addition at the defence this winter. Virgil van Dijk’s injury has been a big blow for Liverpool, and they’ve also had to deal with Matip and Gomez missing a lot of matches this campaign.
Kalidou could be perfect to help the Reds in the second half of the campaign, and reports now claim he has been cleared to leave Napoli provided they receive £100m for him. That could be a fee well worth paying for Koulibaly, who may well be the second-best centre-back in the world after Liverpool star Van Dijk.
Liverpool paid big to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton a few years ago, so they may well be tempted to meet this asking price as well, even if they aren’t always known for their big spending.
Reds and the footballer will come to a decision in the coming days, with all concerned keen to ensure the centre-back goes where he is most likely to get regular playing time. The timescale for Van Dijk or Gomez to return is still unclear and they are not expected back any time soon, while Joel Matip could be back in action this weekend.
