Liverpool and Man United are reportedly among the transfer suitors for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres. The 24-year-old centre-back has shone in Spain in recent times and it would not be surprising to see him earn a move to a bigger team in the near future.
Real Madrid are eager to win the race for Pau’s signature, but face contest from PL pair Reds and Red Devils, who are both prepared to make ‘interesting’ offers for him. The report explains that Torres should cost nearly €50m, which could end up being a bargain if the centre-back can fulfill his big potential.
The Merseyside giants need a new defender at the moment after a difficult campaignof injuries in that position, with Virgil van Dijk’s absence and Joel Matip and Joe Gomez’s patchy fitness records exposing Liverpool’s lack of depth in that area of the pitch.
It would also be useful for Liverpool to beat a rival like the Red Devils to a top signing like Spain international, who could undoubtedly also have an important role to play at Man United. The Norwegian boss arguably lacks a proper partner for Harry Maguire, with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly often looking like weak links in the club.
It would be a blow for Los Blanos to miss out on the Spanish centre-back, however, Real Madrid surely in need of a long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos. Pau has been with Villarreal since joining their academy way back in 2002.
Torres broke into the club’s first-team set up in 2016 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders on show in La Liga, having enjoyed a fine breakthrough season in 2019/20.
