Liverpool interested in signing 17-year-old Portuguese defender

The Merseyside giants will attempt to sign Red Devils target Nuno Mendes ‘in the coming days’, according to reports in Portugal. Man United have been linked with U19 Portugal international who was reportedly almost included as part of Bruno Fernandes’ transfer from Sporting Lisbon to Man United in winter.

But Reds are ready to make a move for Nuno in the next few days to fend off interest from their bitter rivals. Despite not yet playing a senior game for Sporting, Mendes is a highly-rated prospect in Portugal. Liverpool would have to pay between €15m €20m to seal the 17-year-old’ signature as Jurgen Klopp looks to reinforce his defensive options.

Man United are said to be on good terms with the Portuguese defender’s agent, Miguel Pinho, which could help them seal a move for the attacking full-back. Nuno is out of a deal in 2021 and has turned down an offer of a new two-year contract to keep him at the club.

Sporting president Frederico Varandes admitted last week that Nuno is one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and many top clubs are after him. ‘He’s the best Under-19 left-back in Europe,’ Varandes said last week. ‘There have already been approaches from major European clubs with concrete proposals.’

Nuno is a top, top talent, and the left-back must begin to get first-team football in the next few campaigns. At Anfield, it is unlikely he will do that, to start with, but in the Cup tournaments, he could certainly get an opportunity.
