Liverpool in the hunt to sign 29-year-old technically gifted midfielder

Jose Enrique has questioned Reds move for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara, admitting he’s not sure his countryman would be the ‘best fit’ for Liverpool. While Jose, who spent five years at Liverpool, thinks the 29-year-old is an ‘unbelievable player’, he cast doubt over his age and his lack of experience in the PL.

Thiago has won the UCL, two Club World Cups, seven Bundesliga and two La Liga trophies during spells at Bayern Munich and Barcelona, winning virtually every honour available to him at club level.

And although Jose thinks he would be a ‘very, very good footballer’ if he does seal a move to Liverpool, he is not convinced they would get much longevity out of the player.

The German tactician was quizzed over a move for Alcantara after Reds 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Aston Villa on Sunday. ‘‘Would you be surprised if I don’t give an answer on that? Just because I never answer this kind of questions,’’ Jurgen Klopp said on the weekend.

‘‘Thiago Alcantara is a really good player. Like a lot of other players out there, I like a lot. But that’s all I have to say about that.’’ Thiago had been in discussions with Bayern to extend his current contract but talks have broken down, with Spain international looking for a fresh challenge back home in Spain or in the PL.

Reports last week claimed Reds had agreed on personal terms with the Spanish manager and the Merseyside giants must now negotiate a fee with Bayern Bavarians to finalise a summer move.
