The Merseyside giants are reportedly set to beat Barcelona to the transfer of Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar in a deal worth nearly £45m. Liverpool urgently need to make additions in the back-line this winter after the injury to Virgil van Dijk and ongoing issues with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as well.
Slovakia international could be perfect after his fine form at San Siro, and the Reds are now the favourites to win the battle for the defender for £45m. This could be a fantastic business for the Reds, with Milan sure to bolster this struggling Liverpool side as they look to retain their PL trophy.
Liverpool are strongly reliant on midfielder Fabinho as he fills in at the back, while teenagers like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have also had a part to play this campaign. Still, there’s no doubt a more proven defender like Skriniar would be preferable for the German manager, so this sounds like encouraging transfer news indeed.
Barcelona were also linked with the 25-year-old, but the report states clearly that Reds are now in pole position to land the defender. Liverpool would perhaps do well to sign someone from within the UK to limit travel in and out of the country right now when cases have been on the rise for some time, both here and in several other countries.
It will be interesting to see how this develops, but the Reds supporters will no doubt be hoping there is a sensible solution to this issue. Reds have an injury crisis at the back and surely need to bring someone in, but the German manager is certainly right to remind us that there are more important things than football.
