Liverpool in pole position to sign €40m-rated Spanish midfielder

The battle to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window is heating up. Barcelona have already been hot on the trails of Spain international for some time and are facing stiff contest from Liverpool and Man United in his pursuit.

Niguez has experienced a sharp decline in stature at Wanda Metropolitano in the past year or so. A mainstay in midfield for Los Colchoneros till the start of the 2020/21 campaign, Saul had to share playing time quite regularly in the campaign gone by.

His stock did not just fall at Atletico Madrid but also within the Spanish national squad. Indeed, the 26-year-old midfielder missed the ticket for UEFA Euro 2020 and is now reportedly surplus to requirements at the Wanda Metropolitano as well.

So, after featuring well over 300 times for Atletico Madrid, it looks like the Spanish midfielder might be ready for a new challenge in his career, with the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Man United all keen on signing him.

Blaugrana are, in fact, the most recent entrants in the battle to sign Niguez, with recent reports claiming that the Spaniard is keen on joining Barcelona. As per Niguez’s agent, a move to the Catalan club is not set in stone, with the footballer having several options on the table if he chooses to leave La Liga giants.

As for Liverpool, the Merseyside giants have been hot on the trails of Niguez in recent weeks, with a bid being prepared already. Liverpool stay in the market for a long-term replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, with Niguez one of several options to have emerged on the Reds radar.
