The Merseyside club reportedly seem to be making progress on a possible transfer deal for Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak. Real Madrid have also been interested in Turkey international, but Reds have seemingly made an approach over a possible deal worth nearly £28m.
Ozan looks a huge prospect and could be a perfect signing at Liverpool, where the German coach is arguably lacking depth in the centre-back position. Fabinho filled in well there for Liverpool in their 2-0 victory away to Chelsea at the weekend, but it stays to be seen if that’s really a perfect long-term option for the Merseyside club.
Fabinho is better off in a defensive midfield role, and Reds might want more coverage for the likes of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, both of whom have slightly dodgy fitness records. Kabak seems an excellent talent who could be perfect for the Reds, so supporters will hope it’s true that progress is apparently being made on the deal.
The fact that La Liga club have also been in for the 20-year-old centre-back shows only how big a prospect he is, and how good a job he could do at a bigger team.
But with only Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Matip as the senior defenders at Liverpool after Dejan Lovren’s departure to Zenit St Petersburg, there have been suggestions Reds might look to sign another centre-back.
And that fee has been slightly offset by the £9m sale of talented teenager Ki-Jana Hoever to Wolves, with it thought the Dutchman did not want to sign a new deal on Liverpool.
