The Merseyside giants could be given the chance to finally sign Sporting Lisbon defender, Nuno Mendes, in the summer transfer window. Liga NOS giants are now willing to sell one of their prized assets, which has a release clause believed to be nearly the £66m mark.
U21 Portugal international has been on the radar of Liverpool for some time now. Nuno is clearly one of the best talents on the continent for his age. Several teams are said to have watched him, with Leicester and Arsenal among them.
Any move by Reds, then, would see them usurp former manager Brendan Rodgers in the race for Mendes. It was claimed in November that Rodgers was eyeing Mendes as a possible long-term replacement for Ben Chilwell.
Sporting are apparently willing to sell the 18-year-old defender to ease the financial pressures that the pandemic has brought with it. And the fact they’re willing to transfer list their man, suggests they could accept a lower offer to that of the £66m release clause.
The Reds need some sort of rebuild in the summer so adding fresh blood is a good thing. Of course, Nuno Mendes is unlikely to move Andy Robertson from his starting slot, but he could put the pressure on.
£66m is a big chunk of change to part ways with for any club. But you get the impression Sporting might accept that little bit less here. Nuno Mendes is already a fine footballer and given he’s still just 18, he has huge potential. Certainly, one to keep an eye on for Liverpool.
