The German manager is reportedly pushing for his club to beat fellow suitors Real Madrid to the transfer of Sporting Lisbon defender Nuno Mendes. Jurgen Klopp is keen to see off a contest for U21 Portugal international, with the Los Blancos and Leicester City mentioned as potential rivals for the signature of the left-back.
Nuno looks a huge prospect at left-back and could be ideal as a long-term successor to Reds Andrew Robertson, who has been a crucial part of how Jurgen Klopp’s side play in recent times. It’s clear that Liverpool will eventually need to bring in someone to replace Andrew, and Mendes looks a similar attacking threat in that full-back role.
La Liga giants would surely also do well to land the Portuguese defender as a long-term replacement for the aging Marcelo in that area of the pitch. One can only hope the Merseyside giants can do their bit to lure this exciting prospect to the PL in the near future.
The 18-year-old defender could cost nearly €45m, which is his release clause with Sporting. The presence of the Reds has disrupted Sporting de Portugal’s talks with Nuno Mendes, as the footballer now wants to wait to see what the future holds.
Despite his age, the Portuguese defender has not only won a spot in the starting XI of Rúben Amorim, but he is also a regular in Portugal under 21 camp. Mendes is catching the attention of all the big clubs in Europe.
Nuno is the latest wonderkid to emerge from the Sporting academy. Mendes is a first-team regular for the Lions, playing predominantly as a left wing-back.
