Liverpool held negotiations with €20m-rated Eredivisie defender

The Merseyside giants reportedly like Ajax centre-back Perr Schuurs but the asking price is a problem. We think it’s far too soon to pay for it. U21 Netherlands international seems like a great talent. The centre-back who turns 21 this week comes across brilliantly on the pitch and look capable of nearly everything.

Perr’s somehow made people forget about Matthijs de Ligt. The hype around De Ligt was such that there was no question that he was the future of the Dutch back-line. Now we’re not so sure. But we still don’t think the Reds should pay the reported asking price for Schuurs in winter.

The Merseyside club are in a strange position. They’re short at the defence and actually knew they would be heading into the campaign. Liverpool just had three senior defenders on their books, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. Fabinho was there to cover as a fourth-choice but he’s a holding midfielder.

That trio is one shorter than last campaign, then. Dejan Lovren left and the Reds never replaced him, despite Jurgen Klopp saying he wanted four senior options. Now we know they should have signed a fourth, of course. Injuries to Joe Gomez and Van Dijk leave just Matip and he can’t stay fit.

Which brings us to January and whether the Reds will sign someone. They might, Jurgen Klopp admits that, but we don’t know. But we can’t see the Dutch defender being the player they go for if they sign someone. The asking price is around £27m for Schuurs and that’s just too high.
