The Merseyside giants are reportedly close to agreeing on a transfer deal for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly. The 29-year-old centre-back has been heavily linked with Liverpool on several occasions in recent times, but it now looks like huge progress is being made.
It looks the Serie A giants are now likely to sell Kalidou for a reduced fee this summer due to their financial issues, meaning he’s available for as little as £43m. This is a price the Reds would be prepared to pay, and it certainly seems like it has the potential to be a fantastic business.
Koulibaly has been a rock-solid performer in Italy and in the UCL for many years now, and he’d undoubtedly bolster the German coach’s defensive options. It’s been a difficult campaign for Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all out injured for so much of the season.
Once Van Dijk returns, Senegal international could be the ideal partner for him ahead of Gomez and Joel Matip, who have often had poor fitness records. The Reds have also been strongly linked with Ibrahima Konate and Raphael Varane, as well as a permanent move for on-loan Schalke defender Ozan Kabak.
It’s clear Jurgen Klopp will need to rebuild his squad this summer, and Kalidou could be an ideal signing to come in and give them more strength in defence. It could be a possibility after initial negotiations, whilst adding that the Senegalese defender’s asking price has dropped to nearly €70m, which could be an absolute bargain if true.
