Napoli have confirmed the landing of Victor Osimhen from Lille, ending talk of a potential Liverpool move for the Nigerian.
Osimhen enjoyed a fine maiden season with Lille in Ligue 1 and has quickly earned the next move in his professional career.
The striker scored 18 goals in 38 matches for the French side. One of those was against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League, and there were rumours that it wouldn’t be his last goal against an English side.
Reports suggested Victor was a target for the likes of the Anfield outfit and their league rivals Manchester United. But I Partenopei appeared to be the main contenders all along – and now the club have got their man.
Despite reports that Tottenham were trying to hijack the deal, the Italians have signed Osimhen on a five-year contract. The sum is reportedly in the region of €60m.
Osimhen will take former Spurs forward Fernando Llorente’s number nine shirt at the club. He becomes one of the most expensive African players of all-time.
Liverpool were said to be particularly interested in the 21-year-old before his move. Jurgen Klopp allegedly asked for the player, as the German looks to strengthen his title winning side.
He changed agents midway through his talks with Napoli, which could have given the Premier League champions a chance to sneak in, but he has ended up in Serie A as previously expected.
While the exact sum is unknown, Napoli have definitely broken their transfer record to land Osimhen. It was previously the €38 million they paid for Hirving Lozano last summer.
“Can’t wait to put on this iconic jersey, thank you for the warm welcome Napoli,” Victor wrote on Twitter.
