Merseyside club are reportedly considering a transfer swoop for Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez, who has a release clause of £110m. This clause could prove something of a stumbling block for Liverpool, who are eyeing up Uruguay international as one possible replacement for Dejan Lovren.
It makes sense that Reds coach Jurgen Klopp could see Croatia international as someone to axe after his continued terrible form whenever he’s been drafted in as a backup option. Unfortunately, poor injury records for Joe Gomez and Matip mean Reds still rely on Dejan quite often, and it seems clear someone like Jose would be a major upgrade.
Gimenez has shone during his time in Diego Simeone’s side, though he has also fallen out of favour a little more in recent times. The Merseyside giants are also looking at Alessandro Bastoni and Dayot Upamecano as alternative options to bolster their back-line.
The Reds will not spend that kind of money unless the footballer will be a big part of their team. Given the continual development of Joe Gomez, that is unlikely to be the case. The Croatian centre-back has been the fourth choice this campaign and is way down the pecking order after his recent showing at Watford.
Troy Deeney bullied him after making a rare start in place of the injured Gomez. Matip was the first choice partner for Van Dijk last campaign and was part of the starting line up as Liverpool won the Champions League. Dejan is expected to depart Liverpool at the end of the campaign after six years at the club.
