German midfield maestro emerged as surprise transfer target for Man Utd

The battle to add Leon Goretzka to this summer transfer window is intensifying. Barcelona are keen on signing Germany international, who is also a target for Man United, amid his deal standoff with Bayern Munich.

Goretzka joined the Bavarians from Schalke on a Bosman move in the summer of 2018 and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders on show in Germany. A mainstay in the middle of the park now for the Bundesliga giants, Leon has gone on to feature 112 times for Bayern Munich while chipping in with 25 goals and 27 assists along the way.

However, the German giants are in a precarious position over the future of the 26-year-old midfielder, who is currently at an impasse with Bayern Munich over the terms of a new deal. With his current contract running out next summer, some of the biggest teams around Europe have leapt into action, with Man United and Barcelona among those showing an interest.

At Old Trafford, Paul Pogba is in a situation not too dissimilar to the German midfielder’s, at least as far as the duration of the deal is concerned. With the French midfielder being strongly linked with a possible switch to PSG, Man United need to be on the lookout for a potential replacement, even though Donny van de Beek could be an option within the team.

Leon, to that end, has emerged as a viable target for the Red Devils, who are reportedly prepared to offer him more attractive terms than the Bundesliga giants. However, Man United are not alone in pursuit of Goretzka, with Barcelona also keen on signing him this transfer window.
