Chelsea are still in contact with the representatives of Southampton starlet Romeo Lavia after failing with an offer in the summer. U21 Belgium international signed for the Saints from Man City during the summer window. Despite being only 18, Romeo quickly became a regular in the Saints, and his displays caught the eye of the Blues.
The Blues made a £50m deadline day bid for Lavia, despite him only joining the Saints a few weeks before. The offer may have been seen as desperation for the Blues, who then went out and signed Denis Zakaria, with Thomas Tuchel clearly worried about his midfield options.
The Blues are still in contact with the 18-year-old midfielder’s representatives and are still very keen to bring him to Chelsea in the future. Man City have a £40m buyback clause for the Belgian midfielder, so the Blues may have to act fast if he continues his fantastic displays for the Saints.
There’s no doubt Lavia is destined for bigger things, but the Saints are offering him a platform to express himself in one of the best leagues in the world, whereas Chelsea or Man City may not be able to offer him this many minutes. Romeo is a fantastic footballer, and his quality has been evident early on for the Saints.
The Belgian was deemed as untouchable for the Saints, having only signed him this summer, there was no way they were going to lose him. Two fantastic displays against Man United and Chelsea have made his stock rise already, and it may be difficult for the Saints to keep hold of the midfielder in the future.
