Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is set to sanction the sale of right-back Davide Zappacosta. Amid being under a transfer ban, it appears English coach is willing to continue to cut his squad.
London club only managed to bring in Christian Pulisic and Mateo Kovacic over the summer as they had already agreed on deals with the pair before being hit with the embargo in winter.
Several faces have also gone out at Stamford Bridge though, including first-team members Eden Hazard, Alvaro Morata and David Luiz. But it looks Frank isn’t panicking about having a lack of options in his squad. Roma are interested in signing Italy international.
Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta is the first choice option in that position and Lampard is thought to favour youngster Reece James ahead of Davide as a back-up. James spent a terrific campaign on loan at Wigan in the Championship last term.
He was named in the league’s Team of the Season, as well as completing a clean sweep of the club’s Footballer of the Year awards. In contrast, Italian right-back has struggled to settle in Chelsea since joining for £23m two years ago from Torino.
He made only four Premier League appearances last term, though he did appear in the Europa League final win over Arsenal.
But with Roma and Lazio understood to be interested in him, Frank is willing to let him go before the end of the European transfer window closes on September 2. London club also lost 22-year-old wing-back Ola Aina over the summer. Nigeria international moved to Italy for £9m after spending the campaign on loan in Torino.
