Chelsea leading race for 25-year-old Germany international

Newly-appointed Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has refused to rule out Niklas Sule leaving this summer but insists the defender still has all the attributes necessary to be a ‘world-class’ asset for the club.

Germany international joined the Bavarians from Hoffenheim with huge expectations on his shoulders back in 2017 but has so far failed deliver on his early potential and could be on the move after dropping down the pecking order at the Bundesliga giants.

Sule, who made only six starts in the Bundesliga last term, is about to enter into the final 12 months of his current contract at the Allianz Arena and there has been little indication of a potential deal extension on the horizon ahead of the new campaign.

The Blues are rumoured to be keeping close tabs on the situation, with the German boss placing fellow countryman Niklas on his shortlist of targets as he looks to add strength to his current defensive options at Chelsea. Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, PSG’s Marquinhos and Lyon’s Joachim Andersen have also been linked with Chelsea in recent weeks.

And while Bundesliga giants are reportedly open to offers for the 25-year-old centre-back, their new coach, Nagelsmann, who previously worked with the towering 6 ft 5 in centre-half at Hoffenheim, has suggested the footballer could still have a future in Bavaria.

‘If he has the insight to work on his deficits and now is getting a coach who has known him since the U16 team, I’m confident that he will get his engine revving again,’ Nagelsmann said.

The German centre-back played 133 games for Bayern Munich across his four-year stay at the Allianz Arena, helping the side win four back-to-back league titles, two DFB-Pokal titles, three DFL-Supercups and the UCL.
