Chelsea given green light to sign 26-year-old Serie A defender

London club have made Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens their first-choice target at left-back, according to reports in Germany. The English manager is keen to bolster the left side of his back-line and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell is on the London giants’ shortlist.

But with Foxes demanding in excess of £50m for the 23-year-old defender, the Blues have been exploring alternative options. And the 26-year-old defender is now at the top of Blues shortlist ahead of the upcoming window. Atalanta are open to offers for Robin but the Italian club are demanding a €30m transfer fee.

Juventus, Inter Milan and Hertha Berlin have also registered their interest in Gosens. The German left-back joined Serie A giants from Dutch side Heracles Almelo for under £1m in 2017 and quickly established himself as the crucial part of their left flank.

Gosens has been highly praised for his attacking output this campaign, with 10 goals and eight assists in 38 matches for the La Dea. Blues, meanwhile, are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. Kai is understood to have agreed on a move to Chelsea following productive talks with the English manager.

And Blues are hopeful of agreeing on a deal with Leverkusen worth in the region of £73m including add-ons. Robin has seen his stock rise dramatically since joining the Italian club from Heracles Almelo in 2017 for less than £1m.

Blues target has played a key role in Atalanta’s journey to the UCL quarter-finals while his attacking returns have caught the eye of scouts across Europe. Robin has clocked up a fantastic 10 goals and eight assists in only 38 games this term, showing how he would add a welcome extra dimension to Frank Lampard’s side.
