Chelsea have been put on red alert as Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Manchester City.
With Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres likely to switch to the Etihad Stadium in the near future, there are signs that manager Pep Guardiola is being proactive in the transfer window.
According to ESPN, the City manager wants to make another addition in the form of Jose, who has starred for Atletico in recent campaigns.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard believes Gimenez would add experience and strength to his back line as the Englishman looks to continue his summer spending spree.
Chelsea have already purchased Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and are closing in on a £90 million deal for Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Kai Havertz.
Gimenez is 25 but ESPN claim that Lampard believes signing the Uruguay international would be ‘like signing a 30-year-old centre-back’.
However, Frank’s plans for Gimenez may be put on hold with his side still unsure whether signing a central defender is a priority for this transfer window.
Nevertheless, it is stated that Atletico officials are currently demanding that any interested club, which allegedly includes Frank Lampard’s side, activate the South American’s £110m release clause. The centre-half still has three years remaining on his contract.
The Blues are also hunting for a new shot-stopper, with world-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga hoping to return to Spain after a turbulent time at the club.
Lampard is also hoping to bring in a left-back, with eyes on Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico nd Everton’s Lucas Digne.
