Chelsea could come back with an improved offer for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries as they are ready to hold new transfer negotiations with the Nerazzurri over a deal for the wing-back in the coming days. The Blues’ transfer dealings are picking up momentum as the search for extra defenders for the German manager’s squad continues.
The London giants have already purchased Koulibaly, who has made a strong start to life at Chelsea with a debut goal, and Cucurella has also arrived from Brighton for a world record fee for a left-back, as a direct replacement for outgoing Alonso to provide competition for Chilwell.
Todd Boehly hasn’t been scared off by the hefty price tags on both footballers’ heads as the London club turn to more defensive targets.
The new Blues co-owner made an enquiry with Inter Milan for Dumfries last month as Tuchel looks to provide Reece James with a backup, keep the option of using the English right-back as a centre-back and also provide general cover for the ageing Azpilicueta, and even made their opening offer to the Nerazzurri a fortnight back.
However, their proposal was swiftly rejected by Inter Milan as they continue to hold out for a fee of nearly €40m, a figure that the Blues have yet to match. While the Dutch right-back has remained on their radar, their pursuit of him has cooled down in the last week or so as they look to prioritise other business.
