BREAKING: Arsenal close to lose Wenger’s favourite central midfielder

Mathieu Flamini is expected to leave Arsenal at the end of the season when his contract expires, report The Mirror.

The Mirror claim Arsenal are planning ahead to sign a younger defensive midfielder, and will benefit from the £80,000 per week savings on Flamini’s deal.

The Frenchman featured on Monday night and was excellent in the win over Manchester City, but was only selected due to a number of injuries in central midfield.

As noted in an article in The Mail, Flamini is proving a good luck charm for Arsenal – they are unbeaten in 52 consecutive matches he has played in at The Emirates.

The midfielder is 31 and approaching the end of his second spell at Arsenal.

Fellow midfielders Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta both face uncertain futures with their contracts set to expire, and it could still be worthwhile for Arsenal to try and come to terms to renew Flamini’s contract at a lower wage.

The Mirror claims Arsenal are planning to sign a replacement in January if they can find a quality player within the £5-10 million price range.
